Britain’s Adam Yates claimed his second runner-up spot in as many weeks at the Volta a Catalunya.

The 26-year-old, who missed out by one second at the Tirreno-Adriatico, began the 143km final stage 14 seconds behind leader Miguel Angel Lopez.

He finished seventh in Barcelona but remained the same distance behind the Colombian.

A crash with multiple riders saw Romain Bardet, Simon Geschke and Gari Bravo all taken to hospital for treatment.

Italian Davide Formolo, of the Bora-Hansgrohe team, claimed victory in the ascent up the 485m Creu d’Ordal.

Britain’s Adam Yates remains 14 seconds behind leader Miguel Angel Lopez with a stage to go at the Volta a Catalunya.

The 26-year-old, who claimed victory in stage three, finished in 14th place in Saturday’s 169km route.

Australian Michael Matthews pipped Phil Bauhaus by a tyre’s width to win the stage as the top five retained their overall positions.

Sunday’s final 143km stage starts and ends in Barcelona with the greatest climb up the 485m Creu d’Ordal.

Yates has been second overall since winning stage three

Britain’s Adam Yates remains in second place at the Volta a Catalunya with two stages remaining.

The general classification was unchanged after the 188.1km route from Puigcerda to Sant Cugat del Valles, Yates staying 14 seconds behind Colombian Miguel Angel Lopez.

Germany’s Maximilian Schachmann won the flat fifth stage for BORA-Hansgrohe.

Saturday’s penultimate stage is a 169.1km journey to the mountainous interior of Tarragona.

Schachmann was the sole survivor of an early breakaway, finished 12 seconds clear of the pack for his second victory of the season.

Egan Bernal of Sky walked in behind the main pack carrying his bicycle on his shoulder after suffering a mechanical problem but still retained his overall third place position as the incident occurred inside the final three kilometres.

Britain’s Adam Yates remained in second place at the Volta a Catalunya after finishing fifth in stage four.

The 26-year-old was 16 seconds behind Miguel Angel Lopez, whose surge to the line at the 150.3km stage in the Pyrenees earned him the overall lead.

Yates trails the Colombian Astana Pro Team rider by 14 seconds in the general classification with three stages left.

Belgian Thomas de Gendt, who led Yates by 27 seconds after stage two, dropped to 30th place.

Yates holds off Team Sky’s Egan Bernal to take victory

Britain’s Adam Yates moved up to second place at the Volta a Catalunya in Spain after a superb victory in stage three.

The 26-year-old prevailed from an elite group of five at the summit finish of ski resort Vallter 2000 after a 12km climb to an altitude of 2,150m.

Yates is now only 27 seconds behind Belgian Thomas de Gendt, who was two minutes 47 seconds ahead overnight.

Chris Froome, who crashed on Tuesday and was 14 minutes back, was a support rider to Sky team-mate Egan Bernal.

“I had the best legs in the final section,” said Yates, who finished just one second behind Primoz Roglic at the Tirreno Adriatico last week.

“There’ll be more of the same tomorrow. There’s plenty of time to get the overall lead here.”
