Britain’s Adam Yates moved into second place after four stages of the Tirreno-Adriatico in Italy.

Yates, 24, whose brother Simon is competing in the Paris-Nice event, finished third in the 171km stage from Montaldo di Castro to Terminillo.

Colombian Nairo Quintana broke with two kilometres to go, finishing 17 seconds clear of Britain’s Geraint Thomas, with Yates 23 seconds adrift.

Quintana also claimed the overall lead with three stages remaining.
