Cavendish focused on green jersey

Cavendish has won a total of 19 Tour de France stages

Mark Cavendish is poised to become the first British rider to win the green points jersey in the Tour de France.

The Isle of Man sprinter goes into Sunday’s final stage leading the points classification by 15 points having won four times on this year’s Tour.

But with 65 points on offer on the traditional final stage into Paris, Cavendish has vowed to go for a third successive win on the Champs Elysees.

“I haven’t got it yet,” said Cavendish after Saturday’s time trial stage.

He added, in the Independent on Sunday: “I’ve just got a job in hand, and that job’s winning.

“What I’ve got to do is get across that last finish line in first place, and there’s still one intermediate sprint too.

“Normally a break would take care of the points on offer there, but not [Sunday]. So it’ll be nice to go on there wearing green, but it’s not over yet.”

Spain’s Jose Joaquin Rojas is second in the points standing and the only rider with a serious chance of beating Cavendish.

There is an opportunity to pick up 20 points for winning the intermediate sprint, which is around 35km from the end of the stage, and a further 45 are on offer for the rider who crosses the finish line first on the Champs Elysees.

Only one other Briton has won one of the three prestigious Tour de France jerseys – yellow, green and polka dot – Robert Millar claiming the polka dot King of the Mountains crown in 1984.

Cadel Evans, who leads the race by one minute, 34 seconds, is set to become the Tour’s first Australian winner because, for the most part, the 95km stage from Creteil to the French capital will be ridden at processional pace.
