Mark Cavendish has confirmed he will take part in the prestigious Tour of Britain, which begins on Sunday.

The Manxman, winner of the Tour de France green jersey, has been granted special dispensation to ride after pulling out of the Vuelta a Espana.

The Tour of Britain starts in Peebles, Scotland, and ends a week later with stage eight in London.

“Mark’s addition will ensure that the sprints are hotly contested,” said race director Mick Bennett.

“As a team we have worked hard over the past fortnight to ensure that Mark rides the Tour of Britain.”

Cavendish’s participation had been in doubt following his Vuelta withdrawal.

International Cycling Union rules state that anyone who pulls out of one race cannot compete in another while the first one is ongoing.

The Vuelta and Tour of Britain overlap by a day, but the 26-year-old has been told he can enter.

Cavendish, who has won 20 stages of the Tour de France, last competed in the British race in 2007, when he won the opening two stages.
