Mark Cavendish’s lead-out man, Mark Renshaw, has signed a two-year deal to ride with Dutch team Rabobank.

The Australian helped Manxman Cavendish win five stages of this year’s Tour de France but the duo’s HTC-Highroad team will disband at the end of the season.

Cavendish has yet to confirm his team for next year, with British-based Team Sky among the favourites to sign him.

Renshaw will ride in support of Dutchman Theo Boss, but will also target success on his own.

“For many years I helped others to win, now I’m going to try to win some of the biggest competitions for myself,” said the 28-year-old.

Asked earlier this month about Cavendish’s imminent move, Chris Boardman – a former wearer of the yellow jersey on the Tour de France – told BBC Radio Merseyside: “It would be absolutely crazy for him to not take at least Renshaw.

“Cavendish on his own is still a formidable sprinter but he would not have had the volume of wins without the team behind him.”
