Contador loses Giro lead after crash

Alberto Contador lost his lead in the Giro d’Italia after a crash caused chaos 3.2km from the finish of stage 13 in Jesolo.

Spaniard Contador was brought down and his 17-second advantage was wiped out, with Italian Fabio Aru taking the lead.

Astana rider Aru, 24, is now 19 seconds ahead of Tinkoff-Saxo’s Contador, 32, in the general classification.

Sacha Modolo sprinted to victory ahead of the crash that all but ended the hopes of Team Sky’s Richie Porte.

Australian Porte, 30, slipped to 16th in the GC standings after surrendering more than two minutes.

Contador, who had never previously lost a leaders’ journey during a Grand Tour,

suffered a dislocated shoulder in a crash during stage six.

He told Eurosport he was still suffering with the shoulder injury but was confident he could make the time up on Aru.
