Froome climbs to second in Vuelta

Britain’s Chris Froome climbed to second overall in the Vuelta a Espana, as Joaquim Rodriguez took the red jersey after stage four.

Australian Simon Clarke broke away to win the 160.6km stage, with Froome and Spain’s Rodriguez in a sizeable group finishing 15th and 18th respectively.

Froome now lies one second behind Rodriguez in the overall standings.

Spain’s Alejandro Valverde, who had been the overnight leader, was caught in a crash 29km from the finish.

The race ends in Madrid on 9 September.
