Froome in contention in Tour warm-up

Britain’s Chris Froome finished third in stage five of the Criterium du Dauphine to move fifth overall and in contention of a second Dauphine title.

The 2013 Tour de France winner, 21st overall after day four, is 41 seconds behind race leader Tejay van Garderen.

French rider Romain Bardet won the 161km mountainous stage on Thursday.

Britain’s Adam Yates finished 50 seconds behind Bardet in fifth, while Yates’ brother and fellow Orica rider Adam is sixth overall – 43secs behind.

Thursday’s route, from Digne-les-Bains to Pra-Loup, is the same as the peloton will negotiate on stage 17 of the Tour de France on 22 July.

The race, a warm-up to the Tour de France which starts on 4 July, ends on Sunday.
