Injured Reade to miss out Worlds

Shanaze Reade

Reade won the first of her three world titles in 2006

Great Britain’s Shanaze Reade will miss the defence of her title at this weekend’s BMX World Championships in Copenhagen with a wrist problem.

The 22-year-old recently had surgery and has aggravated the injury.

However, she is hoping to return for the BMX 2012 test event at the Olympic Park in Stratford on 19 and 20 August.

“Preparing for the test event is the priority for my Olympic ambitions and I don’t want to do anything to jeopardise being ready for that,” said Reade.

“It was a tough choice to make as obviously I wanted to go out there and defend my world title.”

Reade, who has won three world titles, went to the Beijing Olympics in 2008 as a favourite for BMX gold but suffered huge disappointment when she crashed out in the final.

As well as hoping to make amends in London next year, she is also bidding to earn a place in the GB track cycling team for the team sprint after winning two world titles with Victoria Pendleton in 2007 and 2008.
