Pendleton through to sprint semis

Britain’s Victoria Pendleton continued her fine form at London’s Olympic Velodrome by reaching the individual sprint semis at the Track World Cup.

The Olympic champion won the team sprint with Jess Varnish on Friday, and returned to beat her compatriot on the way to Saturday’s semi-finals.

Pendleton will meet Australia’s world champion Anna Meares in the last four.

Sir Chris Hoy advanced to the second round of the men’s Keirin after powering through to win heat four.

Meares set the fastest time in the qualification round of the women’s sprint with 10.939 seconds, while Pendleton clocked 11.111 to qualify in fourth and Varnish progressed in fifth place with 11.147.

Pendleton beat Russia’s Viktoria Baranova in the first knockout round, while Varnish saw off China’s Junhong Lin, and when the two Britons met in the quarter-finals it was Pendleton who prevailed 2-0.
