Porte withdraws from Giro d’Italia

Team Sky’s Richie Porte has withdrawn from the Giro d’Italia because of injury and will instead focus on being fully fit to support Chris Froome in the Tour de France.

The Australian, 30, injured his knee and hip following a crash towards the end of Friday’s 13th stage to Jesolo.

“I’m gutted it’s ended this way,” he said. “Hopefully I can get myself ready for the Tour team.”

The Tour de France begins on 4 July in Utrecht.

Porte had been in good form during the first week of the Giro d’Italia and was as high as third at one point before time penalties and the crash forced him out of overall contention.

“The Giro has been my main goal this year and I’ve worked incredibly hard all season with this race in mind,” he added.

“The plan for me now is to take some time off the bike, get the medical treatment I need and reset my goals for the rest of the season and come back fighting.”
