Wiggins struggles as Rojas wins

Britain’s Sir Bradley Wiggins finished 81st in the first stage of the Tour of Qatar, 43 seconds behind Jose Joaquin Rojas who took race leader’s jersey.

Spaniard Rojas edged out Belgian Tim Boonen in a sprint with Frenchman Arnaud Demare third on the 136km stage from Dukhan to Sealine Beach.

Four-time Olympic champion Wiggins was dropped with around 5km to go.

The Briton is using the six-stage race as part of his preparations for the Paris-Roubaix one-day classic.

Wiggins

will then leave Team Sky at the end of April

to focus his attention on track racing as part of his bid to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Wiggins’ team-mates and compatriots Luke Rowe and Ian Stannard finished 10 seconds adrift of Rojas in 29th.

Monday’s second stage runs 194km from Al Wakra to Al Khor Corniche.
