British Cycling performance director Dave Brailsford said: “To expect Brad to hold form is a big ask”.

The event takes place in Limburg, Holland from 15 to 23 September.

Wiggins won Olympic time trial gold this summer and world silver in 2011. He is joined in Britain’s 14-man squad by Tour runner-up Chris Froome and

Olympic team pursuit champions Geraint Thomas and Peter Kennaugh

, but fellow Olympian David Millar was left out.

Thomas, Froome and Alex Dowsett, who last weekend won the British time-trial Championships, will compete for the two available places for the race against the clock.

Trott, who won gold at London 2012 in the team pursuit and omnium, is named with sister Emma and Olympic road race silver medallist Lizzie Armitstead in the 12-woman squad.

She is joined in the road race squad by team pursuit colleagues Joanna Rowsell and Dani King, with Wendy Houvenaghel also chosen

despite calling the trio “juvenile” and her non-selection for the Olympic event “unjust”.

Brailsford continued: “Once again we find ourselves in a very fortunate position of having a strong pool of riders across the board from which we can select the final team nearer the time.

“Brad has opted out of riding the time-trial at the worlds; this year’s focus for him has been fully on the Tour de France and the Olympics.”

Wiggins has been

rested since his summer exploits,

but confirmed last month he will

return to competitive action in the Tour of Britain

which starts on 9 September in Ispwich after missing the Tour of Denmark and

Vuelta e Espana.
