Young GB squad head for Beijing

James is one of a young squad for Beijing, with four making their World Cup debut

A youthful Great Britain team will compete at the Track World Cup meeting in Beijing on 13-15 January.

First-choice cyclists such as Sir Chris Hoy will be preparing for February’s London leg, which doubles as the Olympic test event.

That gives a chance to Welsh trio Becky James, 20, Sam Harrison, 19, and Owain Doull, 18.

Performance Director Dave Brailsford said: “Beijing is a great opportunity to gain experience at elite level.”

The Beijing leg is the third race in a series of four, following November’s Kazakhstan meet and December’s race in Colombia.

London will host the finale on 17-19 February.

Becky James is a Commonwealth medallist, while Harrison came to prominence with gold at the same Beijing event in 2011.

James is one of two females travelling, with sprinter Victoria Williamson set to make her World Cup debut – as are Owain Doull, Joe Kelly and Callum Skinner.

Skinner will compete in the sprint disciplines alongside Phillip Hindes and Peter Mitchell, while Doull and Kelly will ride alongside Harrison, George Atkins, Mark Christian and Simon Yates in the endurance events.
